Department of Mass Communication

HOD

Prof. Godfrey Naanlang Danaan

I welcome you on behalf of our team. We offer great opportunities to students to develop their creative and managerial skills in various fields of Mass Communication at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, giving them hands-on training in the latest communication technology and equipment to prepare them for the rapidly changing global media business. Ours is an environment that promotes high-impact scholarship among students and their teachers. We have standard radio and television studios, a newsroom, photography, PRAD and publishing laboratories and a resource centre where our students and our team access study materials (soft and hard). With a rich history dating back to the 1980s, our department has evolved from a symbiosis between the Theatre Arts department and media institutions in Jos. We have since become a standalone department, offering a comprehensive >mass communication programme that has produced award-winning professionals. Some of our alumni are working for global media brands like the Voice of America (VOA), British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Channels TV, Daily/Weekly Trust and Vanguard newspapers. Others are communications managers of companies and press secretaries of government officials and agencies. Some are communication managers in sectors such as finance and banking, education, health, tourism and the police. We are proud of our accomplishments, including organizing international conferences, introducing a dress code for our students to build a culture of decency and journalistic protocols, and pioneering online campus newspaper and radio productions. Our programme has become a course of first choice for many candidates, and we continue to strive for excellence in media education. We have maintained our Full Accreditation status, earning 92.0% in the October/November 2023 Accreditation exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the report of which was released in 2024.

Welcome and thanks for joining us.
