THE UNIJOS CISCO NETWORKING ACADEMY, INSTRUCTOR TRAINING CENTER AND ACADEMY SUPPORT CENTER - JOS.

Cisco Instructors with Lab Bundles

A BRIEF HISTORY.

The Cisco Networking Academy at University of Jos, started in the year 2001 with only Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) curriculum at that time, and the Academy was under Birmingham City University (BCU), UK. UniJos was a Regional Cisco Academy like Port Elizabeth University in Cape Town; and we were both trained by BCU as our Cisco Academy Training Centre (CATC). However, Port Elizabeth University in Cape Town immediately upgraded their infrastructure, lab bundles, and other instructional facilities to a standard that qualified them to be the first Cisco Academy Training Centre (CATC) in Africa. After this, we were moved by Cisco to be under Port Elizabeth University as our CATC.

UniJos Cisco Networking Academy was the second academy in Nigeria after Life Camp Academy in Lagos. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established the Life Camp Cisco Networking Academy, and because of our progress and performance with Cisco activities; Life Camp Academy was later moved to be a local academy under us, that is, we lead them as their Regional Academy, and the only Cisco Regional Academy in West and Central Africa then.We are proud to trained ICT staff and professionals then from Military, Central Bank of Nigeria, Telecoms like Econet (now Airtel), Globacom Nigeria, Commercial Banks, etc.

Similarly, the UniJos Regional Academy’s Local Academies number increases geometrically beyond Cisco maximum required number of Local Academies for a Regional Academy in 2007; so we had to formally seek for official permission from Cisco to add more Local Academies under our tree. In the first instance we were given permission to add five (5) additional academies but within two months we also maxed this number and we were left with no option than to request for another permission, which granted us unlimited number of local academies. Our Local Academies include most of the prominent Universities in Nigeria (e.g. University of Lagos, Amadu Bello University Zaria, University of Benin, University of Uyo, University of Calabar, Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, Bayaro University Kano, University of Maiduguri, ATBU Bauchi, American University of Nigeria Yola, FUT Minna, etc) and expanded beyond Nigeria to include University of Yawunde I, Cameroon, University of Sierra Leone, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, etc.

All these happen under the then University of Jos Network (UJNet) department before the amalgamation of the then University Computer Centre (UCC), Management Information System (MIS) and UJNet into the present ICT Directorate in 2008.

In 2009, we were able to add new curriculum called Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) after training two instructors in South Africa. Also, in 2011 CCNA Security was introduced. We have gone on to add more courses to our portfolio since then.

CISCO ACADEMY PARTNERSHIP MODEL.

In 2010, Cisco changed its academy structure from the concept of Regional Academy to Academy Support Centre (ASC), Instructor Training Centre (ITC), and NetAcad Resource Program. At that time, Academies (including our Local Academies) were all given the opportunity to apply for ASC, ITC, or both by submitting a convincing and captivating proposal to Cisco. UniJos Cisco Academy submitted proposals for both ASC and ITC and our submissions were successful, thus, we are both ASC and ITC for West and Central Africa (English speaking countries) as depicted in the figure below.
