The department of Medicine is one of the pioneer departments created with the inception of the university of Jos/Jos University Teaching Hospital. it is one of the second generation public hospital created by the federal government of Nigeria. It was primarily created for the training of medical students of the University of Jos and the Jos University Teaching Hospital provision of tertiary health care to the general population of Jos and its environs. It is also endowed with house officers training and training of postgraduate fellowship training in the field of medicine. It has since produced Doctors and specialist in various sub-specialties of medicine that are practicing in various health institutions both within the country and the Diaspora.
The department is also engaged with general public lectures and research in both local and international studies in the field of medicine. It has attracted grants from various organizations within and outside the country. It also collaborates with international bodies in the control of AIDS, tuberculosis and other deathly epidemics.
Now part of Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Jos. The current Head of Department is Dr. C.M. Chundusu.
The Department trains clinical medical students at the 400, 500 and 600 Levels through Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Medicine I, Medicine II and Medicine III postings; which involve lectures, tutorials, bedside teachings, teaching in the medical clinics, emergency teachings in the accident and emergency during calls, practical sessions on some medical procedures, and end of posting assessments.

The department has currently accreditations by various bodies including;
1. Nigerian university commission for the training of medical students.
2. Medical and dental council of Nigeria for the training of House officers.
3. National postgraduate medical college of Nigeria for the training of resident doctors
4. West African college of physician for the training of resident doctors.
