Department of Veterinary Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology

The Department of Veterinary Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology is a preclinical and paraclinical Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Jos. The Department started in 2014, with just two (2) staff, Dr. Christiana Dawurung, the pioneer coordinator, and Dr. Adakole Abu, a staff on sabbatical from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

Dr. Chidiebere Uchendu came into the service of the Department In 2016 and replaced Dr. C. Dawurung as coordinator and later acting Head of Department after the later left for a higher degree in Australia. Dr C.E Dung also later joined the Department also in 2016.

With the support of visiting lecturers from the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom (including Dr. O. Oladipo, Dr. O. Asala, and Dr. Y. Bitrus) and Ahmadu Bello University (Prof. J. O. Ayo), and adjunct lecturers from Human Physiology and Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the Department flourished and exposed the students of Veterinary Medicine to the best quality teaching, practice, and research experience.

The Department further grew in academic staff strength in 2018 when Drs. E. S. Idoga, F. O. Zakari, N. O. Ovwighose, G. O. Ochigbo, and I. O. Akefe joined her services. The Department can also boast of highly trained laboratory technologists, including Mr. P. Akubaka, Mr. C. Aliyu,

Mr. I. A. Yusuf, and Mrs. A. A. Adugbe. Mrs. Martina Ferdinand was a very hard-working pioneer Chief technologist of the Department, until her unfortunate demise in 2019. The Department is currently coordinated by Dr. E. S. Idoga. The Department of Veterinary Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology at the moment has four (4) units, namely Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Toxicology, with staff dedicated to teaching and quality research in these areas. The Department offers about 18 courses at undergraduate level. The Department also offers Post Graduate degrees in Veterinary Physiology, Veterinary Pharmacology, and Veterinary Toxicology. The Department manages the Pharmacy Unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University, and staff members of the Department are open to local, national, and international collaborations in teaching, research, and community development.

Duamlong set an academic record for graduating as the best student with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.32 at 70 years old, as announced by the vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Tanko Ishaya. The artist is a native of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State and has spent his whole life in the sports industry; he will clock 70 years old in July 2023. Baba Duamlong was a one-time coach of Nigeria’s senior football team, Super Eagles. In this interview with The Education Report at his Rantiya residence in Jos, while painting some artworks, he gave insights into his switch to the world of art, color and painting, the secret of his academic record of 4.32 CGPA, and his conferment with a first degree at 70 years old.

A Nigerian lady, Haruna Abigail Awadzi who graduated top of her class has attributed her academic feat to the grace of God, hard work, and determination to succeed against all odds. Awadzi from Arikpa, Nasarawa State emerged as the Best Graduating Student (BGS) in Pharmacy from the University of Jos. Speaking with n-Mirror after her oath-taking and induction as a Pharmacist, Awadzi said she had to deny herself of several social activities and concentrate on her studies coupled with the help of God to sustain this enviable educational attainment. The UNIJOS Best Graduand, however, noted that achieving the feat would have been impossible without the sacrificial support of her parents as well as the favorable disposition of her lecturers who are always willing to help their students
