The Department of Anaesthesiology was established in July, 1980 initially as Department of Anaesthetics, with one senior member of academic staff, when the Faculty of Medical Sciences started training for MBBS Programme. The current Head of Department is Professor E.S. Isamade and there are three academic staff and 5 non-academic staff. Each year we receive batches of 500 and 600-level MBBS students as well as Dental Students for postings in Anaesthesia. The students rotate through Anaesthesia in batches, with each batch spending a month. However, lectures are delivered over a span of 5 – 6 months. During their rotations the students are given an overview of the scope of the discipline, and are able to learn the general principles of Anaesthetic practice, pain management and taught to acquire skills in resuscitation, especially basic life support. At the end of the posting, a test is administered, which is part of the continuous assessment score for the final MBBS examination. The Department of Anaesthesiology examines with Surgery Department in both written (MCQ and SAQ) and Clinicals.
