Welcome Message

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension was established in 2014 under the leadership of Professor P.S Amaza as the Pioneer Head of the Department and other Departments in the newly established Faculty of Agriculture.

The Department comprises two disciplines: Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension. The primary objectives of the Department are to equip students at the undergraduate level with sound knowledge of the following:

  1. Fundamental Principles of Economic theory and its application to the Agricultural sector;
  2. Fundamental Principles involved in Agricultural Extension, methods, and enlightening and disseminating agricultural technologies and information.

The Department key into the Vision of the University and the Faculty by striving to become a Centre of Excellence for training and research in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension, with capacity for research for development and consultancy in Improving agricultural productivity, food security studies, livelihoods improvement, poverty studies, baseline studies, adoption of agricultural technologies, impact assessment, evaluation of agricultural projects/programs, agricultural marketing and so on.

The Department key into the Vision of the University and the Faculty by working towards the production of graduates in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension who are equipped with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills for productive and economic agricultural activities in both the private and public sectors of the economy; such as Farm Management, Agricultural Marketing, Monitoring and Evaluation of Agricultural projects/programs, Agricultural Extension, Programme Planning and Management, Community Development, Credit Officers, Investment Officers, Agricultural Research, and so on.

Prof. Dauda Bitrus Bawa
 

Dauda Bitrus Bawa is a Professor of Agricultural Extension, specializing in Rural Development and Agricultural Technology Adoption. Born on 11th January 1971 in Potiskum, Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe, Nigeria. Professor Dauda Bitrus Bawa graduated from the University of Maiduguri in 1996 with a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Specializing in Agric Economics and Extension).

He also got his M.Sc and Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension from the same University of Maiduguri in 2004 and 2011 respectively. Prof. Bawa started his working career with the Yobe State Agricultural Development Programme in 2011 and later joined the services of the University of Maiduguri as an Assistant Lecturer in January 2006 in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension and rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2011.

In April 2014 Prof. Bawa transferred his service to the University of Jos Department of Agricultural Economics & Extension and was appointed as the Faculty Examination Officer (2014-2018). In November 2019, he was elected as the Deputy Dean, of the Faculty of Agriculture.

Currently, Prof. Bawa is the Head of Department, Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Faculty of Agriculture University of Jos. Professor Bawa has held positions outside the University system and in the community and they include

  • Board Member Beckett Memorial College Kukar Gadu Potiskum in Yobe State: 2019 to Date
  • Member, of Yobe State Agricultural Revitalization Committee. Appointed by the Executive Governor, Yobe State, 2020-2023
  • Agric Adviser to Farin Gada Vegetable Marketers Jos Plateau State: 2022 to Date

Prof. Bawa is a consultant to various organizations both at the national and international levels and has collaborated on various agricultural and climate change-related developmental projects. He has over 15 years of research for development activities with institutions such as the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), The World Bank Fadama III Project, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Action Against Hunger among many others. He is a member of various professional bodies which include: the National Association of Agricultural Extension and the Farm Management Association of Nigeria. Prof. Bawa is a recipient of the Innovators of Tomorrow Grant 2010 The World Bank/(STEP-B) Project and a Fellow Cochran_USDA_FAS 2022.

Prof. Bawa has over 40 Scientific publications in national and international research outlets in the areas of agricultural extension, rural development, agricultural technology adoption, and climate change and mitigation. He is currently the Deputy Editor In-chief Journal of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Social Sciences and Reviewer for several national and international journals.
