Unijos VC Seeks Alumni Support to Tackle Power Supply Challenges

UNIJOS VC SEEKS ALUMNI SUPPORT TO TACKLE POWER SUPPLY CHALLENGES

Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya says the institution is proud of the laudable contributions of members of the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA), who are working together with the University Administration towards improving the fortunes of the University.

“We are receiving donations from the Association that is helping to develop certain infrastructural facilities, and providing equipment for our Students to learn,” he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor was speaking when the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA), Lagos Chapter honoured three of its members for their immense contributions to the body and their alma mater during the 2024 Reception and Dinner of the Association held at Lagos Country Club, Ikeja GRA. The Awardees are former Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Odu’a Investment Co. Ltd, Mr. Adewale Raji; Principal Partner, Babatunde Ogala & Co, Mr Babatunde Ogala SAN, OFR and the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Unified Payments, Dr. Agada Apochi.

Professor Tanko, who revealed that the Electricity bill paid by the institution has grown from 20 million to 80 million monthly, following the increase in the cost of Band ‘A’ users by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), solicited support from Unijos Alumni to install a Solar Powered Electricity system for the University. He also asked the Alumni body and the members to support the institution as it hosts all Universities in the country at the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) holding next year.

Chairman of the occasion and Chairman, Odu'a Investment Co. Ltd, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, commended the Association for the laudable initiative of holding the Annual Reception and Dinner, and for acknowledging as well as celebrating the contributions of the Honorees. He stressed the importance of Alumni Associations in developing their alma mater, admonishing Unijos Alumni to help provide infrastructure, equipment and funds required for effective functioning of the University.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman, University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA) Lagos Chapter, Dr. Victor Ogwezzy, said the event was organized to reconnect, network and also honour three of their illustrious members who have supported the Association through the years. He said their immense contributions to the Association and their alma mater have made wide reaching impact on the institution, and on many lives.

The Chairman observed that the Association, through various Alumni Sets and Departments, has mobilized support for the University in several ways, and the umbrella body is currently undertaking a landmark project, the Unijos Alumni Centre to add to the institution’s existing Lecture facilities and uplift the state of its infrastructure.

President, University of Jos Alumni Association, Pastor Nuhu Sani commended the Lagos Chapter for organizing the event and for honouring the Awardees, noting that the University has produced Graduates that have excelled worldwide but are not given the recognition they deserve.

Nuhu described the Honorees as great men who have left their mark in the sands of time. “We have to celebrate our own and let the whole world know what UNIJOS is giving to Nigeria, and to the world".

He challenged the Alumni of the University to give back to the University, stressing the need for the institution to be well developed so they can be proud of their certificates.

Highpoint of the occasion was the presentation of Awards of Excellence to the Honorees with immediate-past President, UNIJOS Alumni Association, Mallam Idris Yakubu coordinating the Award presentation segment. Mallam Idris assured the University that Alumni members would work closely with the Association’s officials to help the University tackle the challenge of power supply, as well as host a successful NUGA Games. He observed that the University of Jos is blessed with many notable Graduates plying their trade all over the world who are desirous of supporting the University Administration meet the institution’s needs, while churning out quality Graduates.
