Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

Vision Statement:

"The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology aspires to be a global leader in advancing the frontiers of pharmaceutical sciences. We envision a future where our cutting-edge research transforms the landscape of drug development, ensuring the efficacy, safety, and accessibility of medications. Our department aims to produce graduates of international standards who are not only well-versed in the principles of pharmacology and toxicology but also possess a passion for ethical and socially responsible contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, public health, and scientific knowledge, and are equipped to leverage and translate local biodiversity of medicinal plants to useful drugs."

Mission Statement:

"To advance the knowledge skills of pharmacology, and promote human health through innovative research, education, and the application of pharmacological and toxicological principles. Our mission is to foster a collaborative and dynamic academic environment that equips students with the skills and ethical mind-set necessary for addressing current and emerging challenges in drug discovery, development, and safety."

The Department of Pharmacology (as it was then known) came into existence in 1983 at the now-defunct Federal University of Technology, Makurdi. The Department was later transferred to the University of Jos as a department in the newly established Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1988, which absorbed the then Department of Pharmacology that existed under the former Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Jos. The department is a dynamic and forward-thinking academic unit committed to advancing knowledge and expertise in the fields of pharmacology and toxicology within the context of pharmaceutical sciences. Our department services the students of the College of Health Sciences and Technology, including Department of Nursing Sciences and the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, all in the University of Jos.

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is well equipped with to carry out advanced research on isolated tissue preparations with its state-of-the-art Power Lab recording apparatus. It has also over the years developed a repertoire of expertise in pharmacological models useful in the validation and discovery of phytomedicines.

The Department has three laboratories equipped for undergraduate training and post-graduate research. It also hosts the highly resourceful Animal Experimental Unit of the University where experimental animals such as rats, mice, rabbits and monkeys are bred and kept to meet the research needs of the University. We are dedicated to conducting cutting-edge research that spans from understanding the molecular mechanisms of drug actions to assessing the potential risks associated with pharmaceutical compounds.

We take pride in offering high-quality education to our students, equipping them with a strong foundation in pharmacological and toxicological principles. Our faculty members are renowned experts who actively contribute to scientific advancements, ensuring that our research and educational programs remain at the forefront of innovation. The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Jos has a strong research focus on ethnopharmacology, provides national and regional leadership in the development of phytomedicines for which it has won many patents.

With a focus on ethical and socially responsible practices, our department prepares students to address the complex challenges of drug discovery, development, and safety. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and a commitment to excellence, we strive to make a meaningful impact on global healthcare, emphasizing the importance of responsible and sustainable pharmaceutical practices."
