Head of Department

On behalf of the Mechanical Engineering Department, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all. Our department is committed to fostering a community of innovation, creativity, and excellence in mechanical engineering education and research. The Mechanical Engineering programme at the University of Jos provides a foundation for professional engineering careers in both government and private sector.

 As a student in our department, you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and a talented and dedicated faculty staff who are passionate about teaching and mentoring. Our curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in the principles of mechanical engineering, as well as hands-on experience in design, experimentation, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, ask questions, and seek out opportunities to learn and grow. Whether you're interested in Production/ Manufacturing, Mechatronics/Robotics, Thermofluids, Energy systems, Solid mechanics, or any other area of mechanical engineering, we have resources and support available to help you succeed.

The department currently run post graduate programmes in Post Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD in Production and Energy Engineering. Our faculty and staff works tirelessly in teaching, research, and service and their dedication to our department and its mission is what makes us stand out.

History

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a five (5) years undergraduate programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B.ENG.) Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.  There are two semesters in each academic year, with each semester made up to 15 - 18 weeks of registration, lectures, tutorials as well as laboratory and studio works.

The Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Jos is a vibrant community of scholars, researchers, and innovators dedicated to advancing the field of mechanical engineering. Our department is committed to providing students with a comprehensive education, cutting-edge research opportunities, and hands-on experience in state-of-the-art facilities.

Our faculty members are renowned experts in their fields, with research focuses in areas such as robotics, mechatronics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, and biomechanics. We offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs that emphasize theoretical foundations, practical applications, and innovative design.

Our research laboratories are equipped with advanced tools and technology, allowing students to explore and develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. We foster close collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and other academic institutions to ensure our research has a significant impact on society.

Our graduates are highly sought after by top companies and go on to become leaders in their fields, known for their technical expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills. We are proud of our department's rich history, strong reputation, and commitment to shaping the next generation of mechanical engineers.

VISION

The vision of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to be recognized as one of the high quality Mechanical Engineering Programmes in Nigeria with global competitiveness.

MISSION

To be in line with the University’s Mission, learning is the first priority in the Mechanical Engineering Department. To implement our mission, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Jos is dedicated to providing the best possible undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Curricula to meet the full range of needs of a highly selective, undergraduate student body.  The programme is designed to ensure a high quality engineering education that will contribute new knowledge through research and at the end of the programme our students are qualified to enter and succeed in the mechanical engineering profession through direct entry to the industrial workplace or further professional study.  In addition, the Department seeks to maintain recognition through scholarly work and service to the University and the external community.

The curriculum emphasizes a rigorous treatment of the mathematical and scientific approach to the solution of engineering problems.  It provides a coherent set of courses in energy conversion and structures/motion in mechanical systems.  The program has design across the curriculum and is capped with an integrated design experience in the form of a final year (500 level) project.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to produce high calibre graduates in Mechanical Engineering with the analytical and problem solving skills required for the labour market as well as in the academic relevant to national and international communities. The Mechanical Engineering Department is to become a Centre of Excellence in Mechanical Engineering discipline and for training out graduates with high academic knowledge and adequate practical background for the creation, transfer and application of scientific knowledge for the advancement of mankind in a friendly, interactive and multicultural environment. It is aimed at turning out engineers capable of solving local Nigerian problems in addition to global challenges that they might be confronted with.

The curriculum of the department covers the following specific areas:

i)      Foundation years at 100 and 200 levels common with other Engineering Programmes in the school;

ii)   Workshop practice, laboratory work and tutorial;

iii)Design projects with bias towards local applications;

iv) Broad based engineering courses and interaction between students and professionals in industryand government;

v)   Project in the final year in which the student works independently under supervision of academic staff;

Special skills and in depth study in a particular area of programme through optional courses and electives
