Dr. Dr. Salamatu is an experienced conservation and environment professional, educator, climate action specialist, international development specialist, charity owner, politician, and mother with over 20 years of research and practice experience in academia, the third sector, and consultancy roles for governments and businesses in Africa and the UK. She has conducted pioneering research on vegetation change drivers in West and East Africa, funded by the International Foundation of Science and the Nigerian Government. Currently, she is focused on uniting biodiversity conservationists in Nigeria to drive sustainable interventions for preserving Nigerian biodiversity through an incorporated charity Coalition for Biodiversity Conservationists of Nigeria (CBCN). Salamatu mentor climate youth activists across Africa and actively engages in human-wildlife conflict and coexistence efforts in Nigeria and Ghana. She boasts numerous accolades, including the 2023 Change Makers in Wales, 2023 Ethnic Minority Welsh Women Achievement Award, the 2022 North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s Community Award, and multiple Outstanding Leadership and Management awards in the UK and Nigeria. She is vice Chair, Adult Learning Wales; Advisory Board member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Wales and Climate Cymru, also an expert advisory on IUCN Greenlist for Nigeria.
Dr. Dr. Salamatu is a Lecturer in Geography and Planning and Deputy Director at the Anthony Nyong Climate Change Centre in University of Jos, Nigeria. Salamatu hails from Balanga LGA in Gombe State, Nigeria, and began her educational journey in the late 1970s. She completed her undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Jos and earned her PhD in Conservation Biology from Bangor University in the UK. Most recently, Dr. Dr. Salamatu was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Bangor University, recognizing her outstanding contributions to conservation, education and civic contributions locally and internationally.
She has taught and supervised undergraduate studies as well as graduate studies and theses. She is well published and has profiles on google scholar, ResearchGate and Academia.
