Professor Patrick Vandi Kwaghe is an agricultural economics expert, specializing in agricultural policy and development. He obtained his degrees from various institutions and worked in several positions in different universities. Prof. Kwaghe has published several papers and worked on many projects related to agriculture and has consulted for several organizations. His areas of research include poverty and food security analysis, socio-economic and environment baseline surveys of project areas, water and environmental management, and community livelihood analysis.
Prof. Patrick Vandi Kwaghe is a Professor of Agricultural Economics, specializing in Agricultural Policy and Development. He was born on 23rd December 1958 in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. He had his primary education in Lassa and went to Teachers Training College in Potiskum, Yobe State where he obtained a Teacher Grade II Certificate in 1979. He proceeded to Borno State College of Education now Sir Kashim Imam College of Education Maiduguri and graduated as an NCE holder in 1983. He also went to the University of Maiduguri and obtained a B.Sc. Degree in Agriculture (Honours, Agricultural Economics and Extension) in 1991. He later proceeded to the Institute of Social Study (ISS) in The Hague, The Netherlands where he obtained his Master's Degree in Agriculture and Rural Development in 1995. Prof. Kwaghe was one of the two pioneer Ph.D. students of the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Maiduguri where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics in 2006.
Prof. Kwaghe started working as a class teacher at Piza (Uvu) Primary School, Askira/Uba LGA, Borno State in 1979. After obtaining NCE, he was employed by Borno State Ministry of Education in 1984 where he taught in several schools before he left their services in 1994. He took up an appointment with the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, University of Maiduguri as a Graduate Assistant in 1994, where he grew through the ranks and became a full Professor in 2012. He left the services of the University of Maiduguri in 2016 and joined the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, at the University of Jos where he is currently working. While in the University, Prof. Kwaghe has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has graduated several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. He is an undergraduate and postgraduate External Examiner to Several Universities and has assessed several candidates to the rank of Reader and Professor.
Prof. Kwaghe held several responsibilities where he worked. While at the University of Maiduguri, he was a Departmental SIWES Coordinator (2002-2006); Faculty of Agriculture Examination and Timetable Officer (2008-2012); Socio-economist, Centre for Arid Zone Studies (CAZS), University of Maiduguri; Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Social Sciences (JAEESS), Department of Agricultural Economics (2014-2016); and Head of Department Agricultural Economics, University of Maiduguri (2014-2016). Similarly, at the University of Jos, Prof. Kwaghe held the position of Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension (2016-2021) and currently, he is the Deputy Dean, of the Faculty of Agriculture. He is also a member of the Senate Business Committee and Senate Affiliation/Curriculum Committee. He has more than forty peer-reviewed journal papers in reputable national and international journals and has chapters in books.
In the development world, Prof. Kwaghe has consulted with national and international organizations as well as has collaborated on agriculture-related developmental projects. He has consulted to World Bank, UNDP, DFID, IFAD, GEF, PASGR, Federal and State Governments as well as their establishments. He has collaborated as a Socio-economist on the Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in Borno State (PROSAB) Project (2004-2008). Areas of research and consultancy interests of Prof. Kwaghe are Poverty and Food Security Analysis, Socio-economic and Environment Baseline Survey of Project Areas, Mid-line and End-line Impact Evaluation of Projects, Project Completion Report, Needs Assessment of Communities, Gender Analysis, Water and Environmental Management, Community Action Plans (CAPs), and Community Livelihood Analysis.
