University of Jos

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the University of Jos came into being during the 1979/80 academic session with the three foundation departments of Architecture, Building and Geography and Planning. The Department of Geography and Planning, one of the oldest departments in the university, belonged to the Faculty of Naural Sciences up to the end of 1978/79 session. The two other Departments, Architecture and Building, admitted their first batch of undergraduate students during 1979/80 academic session. All the three departments currently offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, leading to the B.Sc., M.Sc, M.Phil, and Ph.D degrees. At inception, the faculty was planned so that over time, Departments of Estate Management, Urban and Regional Planning, Quantity Surveying and Land Surveying, as well as Advanced Cartography, would emerge but none of these have been realised to date. The inability of the Faculty to embrace more departments as professed in its initial conception is due to inadequate staff, space, equipment and funding.Faculty of Environmental Sciences

Mission Statement

In addition to the statutory university functions of teaching , research and community service, the faculty is expected to produce self-employable professionals in the form of environmental scientists, architects and builders and to inculcate in them the values and culture of effective patriotism and nation building.

Faculty of Environmental Sciences Today

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the University of Jos is made up of seven departments, each with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, leading up to the Ph.D in specialist areas. Essentially, all the academic staff are Nigerians as a result of the University’s laudable manpower training scheme.

The academic staff are made up of professionals in the following areas:
* Architectural design, construction and maintenance of building types and general landscaping of environments;
* Concrete testing for construction works;
* Soil mechanics testings;
* Manufacture of compressed earth bricks making machines;
* Production of bricks of diversified uses;
* Water distribution treatment;
* Sewage treatments
* Electrical and Plumbing design and installation;
* Roads network design, construction and maintenance;
* Land and Quantity surveying;
* Projects Management for construction works;
* Plan making and printing;
* Environmental impact assessment for diversified land uses;
* Environmental monitoring.

The total number of academic staff

The total number of academic staff on ground is fifty five, (55), with eighteen, (18) in Architecture , seventeen, (17) in Building and twenty (20) in Geography and Planning. The faculty pays special attention to the creative initiative and ability of its students in order to enable them impact creditably on self and national development. For two consecutive years, 198... and 198.... the students of the Department of Architecture maintained the lead in International design competitions in Japan.
In the area of research, staff have performed creditably well and the Faculty Journal has been resuscitated. Staff have participated in workshops, seminars, as well as in the training and monitoring of the United Nations Environmental Protection Programmes for the States and the Federation. Additional lecture halls and a Faculty Mini-Library are essential for improved service and performance of the faculty.

Linkages with Organisations and Research Institutions

At present, the faculty maintains effective joint research linkages with Durham University, (U.K) and Mc-Master University (Canada). In reality, achievements as regards research undertakings and research results have been tremendous. The faculty does not enjoy direct financial remuneration accruing from such research linkages but staff have benefitted through opportunities to further their education through them.
To consolidate her academic staffing and professional ingenuity, the faculty will enforce her statutorily long existing internal linkages, particularly with the Departments of Geology and Mining, Physics and Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. A strong link of this nature will improve efficiency of research and consultancy services.
