UNIJOS VC CALLS FOR GREATER SYNERGY AMONG RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya says there is always need for synergy in Research where knowledge must be cross-examined, ideas shared and concepts exchanged. According to Professor Tanko, such is necessary to record Research breakthroughs that provide solutions to human problems which is why the University is collaborating with various Research organizations for the benefit of the society.

The Vice-Chancellor was speaking while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University of Jos African Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine and Research Development (ACEPRD) and the Tukur Buratai Research Centre (TBRC), Gora, Keffi, Nasarawa State which held at the Council Affairs Chambers, Administrative Complex, Naraguta Campus, University of Jos.

For the Vice-Chancellor, considering that Universities have a mandate to undertake Research activities, TBRC's initiative aligns with that of the University of Jos which underscores the need for the two establishments to collaborate in order to offer solutions in the area of Phytomedicine.

Professor Tanko said the University boasts of experienced Researchers in the in the area of Phytomedicine, noting that, with the kind of investment made by the TBRC and the equipment as well as other relevant resources being utilised by UniJos ACEPRD, there would be greater synergy between UniJos and TBRC. He believes this will yield positive results regarding the proposed the initiative, adding that signing of the  MOU will  enable the two institutions to access  equipment, share resources and knowledge to solve some of humanity’s pressing problems.

While Commending the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the TBRC, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd) for creating employment opportunities for Nigerians and investing his resources in the area of Research, the Vice-Chancellor, decried the situation where many Nigerians who attain various positions of responsibility are not interested in investing in the country especially in academic pursuits but rather prefer investing outside Nigeria. The Vice Chancellor believes this deprives many citizens of the benefits that would have accrued from such investments if they were made in Nigeria.

While observing that the collaboration between the academia and industry in Nigeria has not lived up to expectations compared to other parts of the world, Professor Tanko urged Research organizations in the Country to develop stronger linkages with industry towards ensuring greater utilisation of their Research products.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Board of Trustees and Founder, Tukur Buratai Research Center, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd), said the Centre’s decision to collaborate with the University of Jos arose from the desire to add value to the society and humanity. Gen. Buratai stressed that it is time the two institutions work jointly within both the public and private sectors as well as engage NGOs and Government Agencies towards offering relevant solutions to some of the problems affecting our communities, particularly through the field of Phytomedicine. He emphasized the importance of Research in finding breakthrough solutions to human problems and the need for knowledge sharing and cross-disciplinary collaboration. 

The partnership between the University of Jos and the Tukur Buratai Research Centre (TBRC) is part of the University’s efforts towards harnessing the synergy and knowledge exchange necessary for developing groundbreaking Research that will lead to significant advancements in the field of Phytomedecine and contribute to the overall betterment of society.
