A lecturer in Social Studies Education with specialty in Group Investigation (G.I.) Learning Technique, fellow in Social Studies and Civic Education (SOSCEAN).

Biography               

A female Nigerian born on the 11th June, 1971 from Nemel of Kanke LGA, Plateau State Nigeria. Had early school years from 1977 to 1983 and 1983 to 1988 both primary and High school from St. Luke’s Anglican Primary School and St. John’s College all in Jos, Plateau Nigeria.

Umaru obtained Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelors of Education degree (B.Ed) in 1995 and 1999 respectively from Federal College of Education and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria; and a Doctoral degree of Philosophy in Social Studies Education in 2023 with specialty in Group Learning Skills Technique from University of Jos Nigeria.

Recipients of various awards such as best graduating students (NCE) first degree (B. Ed.) and Master degree (M. Ed.). Others include awards of excellence, peace awards, merit awards for mentorship and dedication to duty. And Nigerian fellow of Social Studies and Civic education studies in Nigeria in 2021, and the most recent in 2024.

Married with three children, Lives in Jos, Nigeria, West Africa and loves researching, mentoring, cooking and exploring new environments.

Responsibilities

Teaching contents of curriculum Planning and Development, methods and instructions in Social Studies, cultural patterns in Nigeria, Social responsibilities and waste management (recycling), gender matters and educational teaching techniques.

Supervising projects and thesis of undergraduates and postgraduate students. Coordi-nating and guiding students to achieve and to be well skilled through school years.

Serving as Departmental Examination Officer, University of Jos Desk Officer on Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), LOC Secretary to Gender Association of Nigeria held in the University of Jos, LOC Secretary to Social Studies Educationists Association of Nigeria (SOSAN) held in the University of Jos, Committee member such as departmental accreditation team, conferences, journals, research committee on nomadic education among others.

Research Areas

Researcher in the field of educational curriculum and instruction in Social Studies, Gender issues, value and skill acquisition, methods improvement for learning, incorporating special learners in mainstreaming, peace education issues among others.

Community development projects include mentoring and reaching out to young learners of different backgrounds within and outside Nigeria to be equipped with life skills and cultural value systems for self and societal development. Dr. Umaru has more than 40 scholarly publications in reputable national and international journals in circulation.
