Department of Business Administration

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

 

The Department of Business Administration has undergone some metamorphosis over the years. It was initially known as the Department of Management Studies, later the Department of Accounting and Management Sciences and now the Department of Business Administration. Although the University of Jos Senate gave formal recognition to the separation of the Departments of Accounting and Management Sciences in 2004 and took up formally in August, 2004. After the separation, the Department was called Management Sciences. With the creation of the Faculty of Management Sciences in December, 2010, the Department was renamed as Business Administration.

The Department runs one undergraduate programme (B.Sc. Business Management) and four Postgraduate programmes ( Postgraduate Diploma in Management Ð PGDM, Master in Business Administration Ð MBA, Master of Science Management Ð M.Sc. and MPhil/PhD Management)

  • A UNIVERSITY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION (UME): FOUR-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME
    • Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 credits at O’Level including: English Language, Mathematics, Economics / Commerce and any other two subjects in Business studies, Government, Principles of accounts, Geography and Biology, from any of the following recognized examination bodies: NECO, WAEC (SSCE), GCE (O’L), NTC, NABTEB and NBC at not more than two sittings
    • i. JAMB Candidates must obtain the cut-off points in JAMB from the four subjects: Use of English and any three relevant subjects listed in (i) above.
  • DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS (THREE- YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMMES)
    • IJMB/ADVANCE LEVEL GCE (A/L):
      • Candidates must have at least two principal and one subsidiary passes in any of the following subjects: Principles of Accounts, Marketing, Finance, Economics, Government, Geography and Commerce.
      • i. In addition to the IJMB/A’L, candidates should have Credits in five O’L subjects, as specified in A (i) above.
    • DIPLOMA LEVEL, ODINARY NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND)/HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND):
      • Candidates must have completed from a recognized institution with a minimum of lower credit in any of the following fields of studies: Business Administration, Accounting, Accounting /Auditing, Banking, Finance, Marketing, Purchasing and Supply, Actuarial Science/Insurance, Psychology, Business Studies, Public Administration, Statistics and Financial Studies.
      • University of Jos Diploma in any of the above fields of study.
      • i. In addition to the National Diploma or Higher National Diploma, Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) credits in O’L subjects as per O’L requirements in A (i) above.
  • NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (NCE) REQUIREMENT: In addition to O’L requirements as per A (i) above, candidates must have at least a merit pass in any of the following: Business Education, Mathematics/Economics, Geography/Economics Secretarial Studies and Financial Studies.
  • PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the O’L entry requirement as per A (i) above, a candidate will be eligible for admission if he/she passed any of the following professional courses: ICAN, CIB, ACIS, CIS, ACCA, NIM and CMA or ICPA.
  • The Department offers the PGDM on full time: Minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters.
  • Five credit passes including English and Mathematics at the ‘0’ level
  • Bachelor’s Degrees with at least second class lower Division from recognized Universities
  • Third class degree holders in Management related areas from recognized Universities.
  • The PGDM programme requires a minimum of 34 credit units made up as follows:
    • Fourteen core courses (2 credits each)
    • CES 702 Entrepreneurship (2 units)
    • Research Project (4 units)
  • All candidates must have five credit passes including English and Mathematics at the ‘O’ Level, as basic requirement.
  • Candidates with Bachelors degree in Management, Accounting Marketing Business Administration, Banking and Finance. Actuarial Science and any discipline acceptable to the department from an approved university, and must obtain a minimum of second class lower division.
  • All candidates must have minimum of one year managerial/administrative experience.
  • All candidates must have attained a satisfactory level of performance in the university’s admission test and interview.
  • All candidates must have demonstrated adequate intellectual capacity, professionalism; maturity and effective decision-making and problem solving potentials during the university’s admission test and interview.
  • Candidates with postgraduate diploma from a recognized university and who have passed with a minimum of upper credit may also be considered for admission provided the university’s matriculation requirements are satisfied.
  • In processing applications management work experience shall be regarded as a distinct advantage. Candidates are in addition required to pass the MBA Admission Examination which is set by the department at 70% and above.
  • DURATION OF MBA PROGRAMME
    • The full-time MBA programme should run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.
    • The Part-time should run for a minimum of six semesters and a maximum often semester.
    • For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the senate shall be required.
    • All candidates must have 5 credit passes including English, Mathematics and Economics/Commerce at ‘O’ level
    • Candidates with Bachelors degree from an approved University and must obtain a minimum of second class (lower) in Business Admin/Management.
    • This programme is full time and will run for a minimum of 4 semesters maximum of 6 semesters. For extension beyond the maximum period, special permission of senate shall be required. Admission shall be open to graduates with good Master of Science degree in Management, M.Sc Management/M.Sc Business Administration, with at least an average of B grade (60%) which includes course work and research thesis from a recognized University.
    • Admission shall be open to graduates with good Master of Science degree in Management, MSc Management/MSc Business Administration, with at least an average of B grade (60%) which includes course work and research thesis from a recognized University.
    • (Full time: A minimum of six (6) semesters, a maximum of ten(10) semester
    • Part-time: A minimum of ten (10) semesters and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
    • For extension beyond the specified maximum period, a special permission of the Postgraduate School shall be required.
